DIY Date Night

When you only have 24 hours, sometimes multitasking has to take over.  FH had errands to run, a nap to take, and massive sorting and packing to do…plus we were hoping for some semblance of a date.

While he was napping I decided to run out for cookie ingredients and grabbed a few cheeses while I was at the store.  Ended up being just the answer to our dilemna.

Wine and cheese night…nom nom nom.

The wine was a bottle we’ve had hanging around for ages.  Not a favorite at all, but you do what you gotta do.  :)

029 030

His cheese, dill havarti.

038

Her cheese, French brie.

037

All together with some old cheddar, some Swiss, and multigrain baguette.

039 043

I added some sliced Honeycrisp apple for myself…and at the last minute remembered we had red pepper jelly in the fridge.

041

Later we cooked up the last of the homemade bacon wrapped scallops from the freezer.  Love these!  Will have to watch for  another scallop sale and fill up the freezer stash again soon.

004

Sometimes a relaxed night in with comfy clothes and bad TV is just as good a date as heading out to a restaurant.  In this case, it was just what we needed.

Miss you already, hon.  Be safe and hurry home. xox

Tonight’s Gonna Be a Good Night

and tonight’s gonna be a goooood night.

and tonight’s gonna be a good, good night.

Tonight, tonight… :)

<insert dancing around here>

WoooooT.

I have now collected Miss Cat and her man Mike from the airport and we met Miss Jen and her man Danny and Miss Tasha for brunchy-brunch.

Mmmmm…Cora’s.  droooool.  Theo’s veggie omelette with a side of bacon.

023 024

So busy chatting I don’t even remember eating.  Good thing is that I did stop before I cleared the whole plate.

We took a pic of Jen’s crepe because believe it or not none of us had ever ordered a Cora’s crepe and we had no idea how friggin big they are.  She couldn’t even fit the whole thing in the shot!

025

The travellers are having a bit of a nap to catch up from their overnight flight, while I’m cramming in a few hours of work…and waiting impatiently for Miss Amy and her man Andrew to arrive.  Then tonight we are all off to Miss Angie’s to enjoy a LOBSTERFEST!!! with Miss Lex, Farm Girl, and Miss Lynn and their hubbies.

Notice a hubby theme?  Ask me how sad I am that my man is in the middle of the ocean right now.  booooooooo.  :(  Stoooopid Navy.

I fuelled with a little real coffee with breakfast…trust me folks I’m gonna need it!  But now I’m on a decaf and lots of water.  Til tonight when I’m going to savor a lovely glass of Angie’s sangria…can’t wait!

News from the Sea

A little background:

FH has signed on for a UN mission that will have him away for a whopping SIX MONTHS next year.  It took three tries for the stars to align, but it looks like he finally got it to work out.  The final hurdle he was facing was finding time to get to the mandatory prep course in Ontario.  Every time there’s been one scheduled, his ship has been at sea and he couldn’t go.

So his ship promised him they would do their best to get him on the one coming up in October…but you guessed it, they are at sea right now!  Course starts Oct-19th…he’s sailing until the 30th…but they have been trying to find him a replacement and it looks like today it finally happened for him.

Paraphrased from today’s email:

Great news, bad news, bad news and good news.

Great news - Confirmed today, flying out of Edinburgh once we get in.

Bad news - only going to be home for an evening or a day at most, because I have to fly out to Ontario the next day.

Bad news - if I would have been sailing, I would have been home on Oct 30....now I’m home Nov 13.

Good news - course is over on the 13th instead of the originally scheduled 16th, so I’m home for your birthday.

I’ll be happy when it’s all over and done with.

This morning I enjoyed my coffee while finishing the last two chapters of my book (while I waited for Windows updates).

001

And a whole (I know WHOLE!) cinnamon raisin bagel with light cream cheese and raspberry jam.

002003

I see blue skies out there so after a bit more work I’m heading out for another walk.  Got to enjoy that crisp OCTOBER air!

Just Sayin’

There’s nothing that can bring on the waterworks quite like the drop-off zone at the Navy base on the morning a ship is leaving for a long sail.

All the wives/girlfriends/partners dropping off their Navy men (and women), with only quick hugs and kisses goodbye in the parking lot.

It’s impossible to drive off with dry eyes.

Is it October 30th yet?

(…and let me just say, this is only a regular sail for tasking exercises, etc.  I can’t imagine what it would be like if he was deploying.)

Nap Time

Not even a steeped tea with milk could save me from going back to bed after dropping Mom at the airport this morning.  That 5:30am alarm buzzer came mighty early after not falling asleep until sometime after 2am.

IMG_4646

You know I really needed a jolt on the way home because I stopped for Timmy’s.  You all know a Timmy’s stop is pretty rare for me.  I do like their tea though.

Bye-bye Mom!!  :(

When I woke up again at 11:30 I was craving breakfast.  Unfortunately the fruit situation around here is in dire straits…the last of the grapes were bad and so were the last 4 Sunrise apples.  I guess they didn’t like it in the fridge.  So I had to make do with yogurt and some mix-ins.

The last of the Foxhill vanilla yogurt with raw oats, ground flax, hulled hemps seeds, a few pecans, and a sprinkle of craisins.

Coffeeeeeee.

IMG_4651

Since breakfast was so late and I had a few cups of coffee to keep my hunger at bay, I skipped lunch and just made a couple of little hummus wraps to tide me over through our afternoon walk.

IMG_4653

Late afternoon FH and I decided we should get out of the house and headed over to the BLT trail for a walk.  We walked about 2.5km in and then back…another nice, crisp, brisk day on the trail.

Cracked open a bag of multigrain Tostitos for a quick munch when we got back…with salsa.  Love these chips.

FH is off to sea tomorrow for five effing weeks (actually he informed me today it’s closer to six weeks…I hadn’t done the math since they changed the departure date…boooo) so we planned a date night at home.

In lieu of dinner we made a little wine and cheese night.  FH had been saving a bottle of Tait basket pressed Shiraz he picked up during our visit to Winnipeg in July and decided tonight was good night to open it up.

IMG_4659

Along with a plate of cacciatore, extra old white cheddar, swiss cheese, the cranberry cheddar from Foxhill, and fresh sourdough with real butter.  I added some pickles too just for fun.

IMG_4656 IMG_4657 IMG_4658 IMG_4660

nom nom nom.  All deeeelish (well except I am disappointed by the cranberry cheddar…sorry Foxhill, but I’m not a fan…I couldn’t taste cheddar or cranberry…just blah). I’ve been savoring my wine for a few hours while we watch movies…it’s perfect for sipping.

And now that we are on to our second movie (how romantic are we with Wolverine on BluRay?) I’ve finally broken out my secret treat that I picked up at the mall the other day.  Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory english toffee.  :) Yum!!

IMG_4663

It’s going to be very quiet around here tomorrow.  After having Mom here for two weeks, and FH around for most of the Summer (the longest he has ever been along side since we’ve been together) (although he was away for vacation, etc quite a lot) it’s going to be weird to be alone for more than a month again.

Good thing I’ve got my blogger gals coming to visit very sooooooon!!!!! :)

Wet Laundry

Well, FH is gone. Boooooooo! Six weeks....he won't be back until May-29th. Argh. Yes I am used to this, but it doesn't mean I have to like it! I have lots to keep me busy...thank God...but it still sucks to be without my honey.

Got up extra early this morning to drop FH and his coworker off at the ship, only to realize that all of my gym clothes were still sitting in the washing machine. oooops. I mean, not just my pants or one top, but all three of my bottoms and both of my supportive workout tops. I didn't even have something ugly or ill fitting I could have used. Sort of annoying, as I usually use my workout to help burn off some of the blues from dropping FH off for these silly long sails.

So instead I took myself to Starbucks! haha, of course. A grande vanilla non-fat Americano misto always help take the sting out of a crappy morning (sorry no camera with me this morning). I sat for about 45 minutes sipping my coffee and reading my book. It helped. But I still need a good sweat....later for sure.

As I'm sure you can understand I didn't take the time to post dinner last night so I could hang out with FH instead. He was still feeling super crappy so we ran our errands and then just stopped at the grocery store to bring home some dinner. He wanted more chicken noodle soup, and got a sandwich to go with it. I opted for sushi...spicy California Rolls and spicy tuna rolls. Pretty good for supermarket sushi.

After dinner, we may have taken care of the rest of the Easter candy. At least now it's gone and I don't have to deal with it any more. One of these holidays I will have to attempt to resist the temptation to buy that junk just because it seems like the festive thing to do!

I did discover this yummy English Toffee tea the other day though, so I made a cup of that and it helped kill the sweets craving.

Short Notice

Poor FH was informed by work yesterday that they are sailing this weekend. Hey, thanks for the notice! So no fun Friday night pre-birthday dinner plans for us. Boooooo. He doesn't even know when he'll be back....they "hope" Saturday night, but he's betting on Sunday or possibly Monday. I will have to think of a little something fun for Monday evening, since that's his actual bday anyway. Silly Navy!

I had lunch right after my last post. The leftovers of that bland black bean soup from yesterday (which I accidentally overheated in the microwave, causing beans to pop and make a big mess!) and another yummy hummus and veggie wrap. Delish! (well, the wrap...not so much the soup). At the last minute I threw a handful of Riceworks Salsa Verde chips on the plate too. Yummy.

After a few more hours of work I needed to look at something other than the computer so I heated up a forgotten cup of coffee to have with my afternoon snackie. I put out a glass of water too because I've been sorely lacking in the hydrating department the last couple of days. I perused that Home Depot mini-catalogue, dreaming of sunny days on the deck and remodelling our bathroom. :) Unfortunately that plum was not good...mealy...blech.

Now back to work... training to do to cover for one of our marketing guys...ahhhhhhh! Pin It
