Fox Hill Cheese House

As mentioned, while Mom and I were out in the Valley on Saturday I made sure to make a stop at Fox Hill Cheese House.  I missed out when Farm Girl took Lynn and Angie there and have been disappointed ever since!

“Come visit us at Fox Hill Cheese House where we strive to develop cheese that reflects the natural elements and seasons of the Annapolis Valley.”

First, I was surprised by how big and beautiful the building was.  I don’t know what I was expecting…an old farmhouse or shed or something?  LOL.  Definitely not this lovely new building and pergola.

Second, I was impressed by the spacious, very clean, and large store inside.  Again, I don’t know what I was expecting but certainly not the modern row of refrigerators loaded with all of the cheese, etc and definitely not the freezer of homemade gelato staring me in the face as soon as we walked in the door.

If only we hadn’t been on our way to lunch, the gelato would have been a nice treat!!

I saw several different cheeses I would have loved to try, but opted to just chose a couple.  Mainly due to budget, but also because we had no way to keep things cold in the car for the rest of the day (must plan ahead next time!).  Conveniently they sell those little lunch kit sized freezer packs for $2, so with one of those and a paper bag we were good to go.  :)

The two girls working there were super nice and very knowledgeable.  Quark is one of Fox Hill’s main products and although I had a vague idea what it was we needed a little lesson.  It was explained to us as European style cream cheese. 

We tried a few flavors from the sample tray.  Funny enough I never tried the curried one, but for some reason that is the one I chose to buy.  I’ve used it twice now but I kind of wish I had bought the garlic one because it seemed more versatile and was really good just on it’s own.  Oh well, live and learn.  There’s always next time!

 

I also picked up a container of their vanilla yogurt.  I heart me some good vanilla yogurt and trying theirs was a must.  It’s pretty good!  Not as thick as I would expect, and higher in calories than I want for everyday eating…but a lovely treat and it’s cool to buy something that is actually made here!!

The final purchase (actually it was the very first thing I gravitated to when I peered into the cooler) was cranberry white cheddar cheese.  I haven’t tried it yet, but I can only imagine how freaking yummy it’s going to be.  :)

Not sure why I don’t have a photo of that last one, but not to worry…it won’t be long!

Our first stop in the Valley was to actually drive out past Foxhill to Canning and check out the Look-Off, which overlooks the entire valley.  Pretty cool!
