Sunday Splash

Before bed on Saturday night I updated my Facebook status stating that if anyone was interested in going for Sunday brunch they should call and wake me up in the morning.

Tiffaney did! :)

We had a few ideas of where to go but figured they would all be crazy busy.  As we drove up Johnson Street I realized that I’ve noticed Demitasse a dozen times since I’ve been back but I always forget about going there.  Just as I mentioned it we found a parking spot!  So Demitasse it was.

The menu was so good neither one of us could make an easy decision on what to order.  All I said was “why haven’t we always been coming here?!!”

It’s a funky place with local art on the walls and mismatched coffee cups on the tables.

I had narrowed my options down to three or four menu items…thankfully when our server came over he saw our distress and offered to tell us his favourites.  One of his recommendations was on my short list so that is what I chose.  In fact, Tiff chose the same thing.  :)

Heuvos Demitasse.  (I can’t seem to find their website…perhaps because they are under new management…so my description is probably lacking…)  Baked tortilla with cheddar cheese and black beans, topped with roasted veggies and spicy chorizo.  Topped with fresh salsa, sour cream, tomato slices and sunny side egg.

I ordered my egg over-medium as I’m not a super fan of runny yolk.  When he brought our order our server suggested their homemade hot sauce should be added to the dish.  Yum!!

We were both stuffed when we waddled out the door.  Demitasse is definitely on our list for future weekend brunches.

Afterwards we decided just to do a little shopping in the mall.  On our way out I grabbed an Iced Coffee for a refreshing afternoon pick me up.

There may or may not be a cookie in that little bag.

After dropping Tiff off for her afternoon plans I decided to head down to the waterfront and check out what was going on for Symphony Splash.

I spent a little time with James Dean playing tourist.

It was still early but thousands off people lined the waterfront, the grounds of the legislature, the sidewalks, and the closed off streets watching the afternoon musical events on the barge.  I listened to the military band perform while I wandered.

After a while I caught up with some friends and we decided to find a patio to enjoy what was left of the sun with a few cold beverages.  We found a table at Swiftsure Lounge which offers a nice patio with reasonably decent food.  Not sure why but Bud Light Lime caught my eye.

IMG_8565

We sat long enough that the dinner hour arrived so I ordered up some fish and chips.  Again with the lack of veggies.  I guess I need to double up on salads and workouts this week.  :)

IMG_8566

Not the best fish and chips ever, but it still hit the spot.

After dinner we walked back to the main festivities where the Victoria Symphony was just getting under way.  Originally I had wanted to see this part and stay until the fireworks at the end but the weather had really cooled off and we were all freezing.  We stopped for a coffee from one of the tents but as we kept walking we all just decided we were done for the day…so home it was.

Sitting here I could actually hear the finale cannons go off so I went and looked and sure enough I could see a few of the fireworks through the tree from my deck!  I wasn’t fast enough to get a photo, but I was very happy to catch the glimpse.  I heart fireworks!!

No holiday Monday for me, but HAPPY BC DAY to my fellow BCers…and HAPPY NATAL DAY to my lovely Nova Scotians…and HAPPY WHATEVER HOLIDAY to anyone else enjoying a lovely long weekend.

Welcome August.  Whoa.

Double Date

The day flew by…somewhat like this post is about to!

For lunch I was going to make a salad, but we are getting quite a collection of leftovers in the fridge so I decided I’d better use a few things up.  Most important (ie: nearing it’s last legs) was the homemade corn chowder

040

Topped with 1/2 oz grated light cheddar

045

Served with crackers and lemon-dill hummus…and a few grape tomatoes just so I felt like fresh veggies were involved.  :)

053

Picking FH up from work this afternoon seemed to take forever and when we got back I still had work to do and had to get ready to go out tonight.  Poor planning on my part I guess.  Anyway,  I needed a snack to tide me through til dinner.

Plain yogurt with some of yesterday’s granola bar crumbled in.

055

Holy moly, this was sooooo good!!  Chocolate, pecans and dried cranberries in that bar.  Yum!

059

Running late, as per usual, we headed off to meet Lynn and her hubby for dinner before the symphony.  We chose Il Mercato.

So many yummy things on the menu, it was difficult to choose…but I eventually settled on the Lasagna with Chicken and Sweet Potato.  OMG…soooooo good!  I wasn’t sure what to expect but it was delicious and a generous but not ridiculous portion.

026

Rose sauce is my favorite!  The best of both sauce worlds.  :)

027

I brought home mucho leftovers. Yay!

Lynn and I also shared the Risotto Croquettes.  Drool.  I generally love anything with risotto, but can’t resist when it is rolled into a ball, stuffed with cheese, and fried up to tasty goodness.  Super yum.

025

Lynn only wanted one, so I gladly ate two!  ha!

After dinner, we quickly made our way over to Symphony Nova Scotia.  I won tickets on Twitter again!  :)  I’m glad that FH is home this time since he’s the real classical lover.

Tonight’s concert brought a guest conductor and violinist all the way from the Buffalo Philharmonic.  Death and the Maiden, conducted by JoAnn Falletta.

I don’t know the first thing about symphony music, but I know I liked this.  :)  The first piece was quite happy, which I love.

All in all a fun night! Thanks to @SymphonyNS!

Oh, and look at this way fun box that arrived at my door from FedEx today…

What’s in the box?!

Santa Shuffle and Symphony Saturday

This morning we woke up to this…

IMG_7250 IMG_7252

Which is crazy because yesterday looked like this…

IMG_7197 IMG_7211

While the Halibloggers were running this!…

IMG_7201

The Halifax Santa Shuffle 5km Fun Run!!!

IMG_7209 IMG_7203 IMG_7204 IMG_7208

My first 5km fun run!…

IMG_7202

38 minutes!!!  Angie, Lynn, Tasha and I ran together while Farm Girl and Lex were a couple minutes behind us pushing Little Josh in his stroller.

I want to thank the girls from the bottom of my heart for running at my pace because I’m the slowest one.  I know they could have probably run the whole thing without breaks, but everyone walked together a couple of times so we could be together and finish together.  And because of them, I pushed myself a little harder than I would on my own.  We finished in just under 38 minutes and I’m soooo proud of that.  I had figured on trying to make it under 45 minutes if I was on my own, so this is awesome!!  And I didn’t even feel like I was going to die at all!!  :)

IMG_7181IMG_7187IMG_7192IMG_7182IMG_7196

Make sure you check out Angie’s blog for a funny video of us actually running…

IMG_7198 IMG_7206

Yaaaieeeeee Halibloggers!!

Special thanks to Laura for the cute Santa hats for our team!

Pre-run fuel in the car…

Whole wheat English muffin with peanut butter & banana.

Post-run brunchy fuel with the girls at Your Father’s Moustache

IMG_7215

Croissant with scrambled eggs, cheese & ham

IMG_7219

With pan-fries…

IMG_7218

And the worst coffee ever!  You know it’s bad when you pour a creamer in and the coffee doesn’t change color.  Blech.

IMG_7217

So I had to stop on the way home for a Starbucks treat…must.have.caffeine!!!  Grande reduced fat egg nog bold coffee misto

IMG_6899

After that I had to race home.  It was already 2pm and I had to wash the race off and get ready for a double-date night out for dinner and the symphony.  Our evening was to start by 4pm!  Eeeeek.

I made it just in time…but in such a hurry, hardly any photos.  Gah.

Dinner was at Cut Steakhouse

FH was impressed with their scotch list

IMG_7229

I ordered a 6oz local petite filet and shared in the side dishes for the table.  Scoop of garlic mashed potatoes, scoop of pomme de terre, big scoop of mac & cheese, and more than my fair share of asparagus

FH poured me some red wine, and pre-dinner I enjoyed a couple of vodka-sodas.

Decadent but all quite responsible portions so I felt just right when I walked away from the table.  It helps to share the side dishes among four people instead of two.  You can try more and not feel obligated to clear the dishes!  :)

And then the whole reason for our night out…The NutcrackerSymphony Nova Scotia featuring Halifax Dance!  (We didn’t even know there was dance involved…LOL…so it was a pleasant surprise!)

Balcony seating…

IMG_7234

The dance interpretation was a little odd…still Clara and her dreams of the toys, but a different take on the original.  I like dance though, so I enjoyed it regardless.  The set was lovely!

IMG_7240 IMG_7246 IMG_7248 IMG_7249

Not supposed to take photos, so I waited until they were taking their final bows before I snuck in a few shots.  :)

The music was superb!  FH has been to several symphonies (Winnipeg is quite famous for their orchestra) and wasn’t expecting this one to be as good as it was.  I was glad he enjoyed it.  A great festive date night!  :)

A long day for me.  I was exhausted by the time we finished our evening.  *yawn*

Fun.Run.Food.Music.Friends.  Nice!
