I feel like owe you all a make-up post since I slacked out last night. Seemed like the perfect time to finally post about my lunch experience at The Wooden Monkey here in Halifax.
Bad blogger! It’s been weeks since we went there. But I’m already trying to figure out when I might get to go back. Maybe one day the sun will come out and I will get to try their cute patio before the cold seasons really set in. Halibloggers?
It was Eat Atlantic Challenge day so Angie and Farm Girl invited me to join them downtown. They chose the Monkey because of their impressive menu of organic, macrobiotic, and locally grown fresh ingredients. What better way to ensure that we were eating as local as possible for our challenge?
I was first off impressed with their amazing building and perfect location (although parking was a bit of a nightmare that day). The structure itself is very cool…modern and rustic at the same time and I was intrigued by the pergola on the roof.
Inside, the dining area was bright, cheery, kitschy and dynamic, with mismatched tables and chairs that somehow felt like they did match. :) Really fun and interesting art, complete with lots of monkeys! Completely reminded me of the coffeehouse/restaurant I spent a fond 5 years working in at the end of high school…which is a big thumbs up and probably part of the reason I enjoyed my visit so much.
The menu is seriously impressive. The Monkey has really outdone themselves creating MANY dishes and proving that you can indeed provide a lovely variety using local ingredients. Opened my eyes to just how much is available if you are willing to look.
I opted for the Veggie Pizza. The idea of potatoes just sold me on it for some reason. Also spinach, red onion, mushrooms, tomatoes, olives, and goat cheese. Toppings made in heaven I think! It was deeeeeelish. I wouldn’t hesitate to order it again (although Angie’s Roast Chicken & Pesto Sandwich looked amazing so I think I need to try it next time) it was that good. I ate about 2/3 of my pizza and was totally full…and the leftovers reheated nicely in the oven the next day.
The prices are a tad higher than I would normally like for a weekday lunch, but it’s true you get what you pay for…and I have NO PROBLEM paying for quality. I would gladly like to make a monthly lunch date at the Monkey with my girlfriends any time. *hint hint ladies* :)

Sounds delish. I've heard great things about that place and have wanted to give it a try but never seem to make it over the bridge to get there.
That pizza looks delicious! What a cute restaurant. I'm with you, I have no issue paying for quality.
And don't worry about forgetting to post and take pictures...You spoil us with your consistant posts....you deserve some down time!
Went to Wooden Monkey last week and was not impressed-soup cold,side salad puny!But I knwo they also usually have good stuff-just a bday day there!
BUT the tastiest lunch I had today AND amazing dessert...was at JANE'S ON THE COMMON!!!So amazing and locally sourced.Seriously five times better than the Monkey!

I've been wanting to go to Jane's for a year...ever since I heard about it. But it's always so freaking busy. I don't wait an hour for brunch. :)
